OPML Editor Home as of August 2008 Permalink to this headline.

The August 2008 release of the OPML Editor is different from previous releases in this way: It ships with an empty Tools folder.

It comes knowing how to do one thing, edit OPML documents. Everything else can be added by installing tools using the new Tool Catalog command. Screen shot.

This document explains how to get started.

Downloading a fresh install Permalink to this headline.

Windows: Permalink to this headline.

1. Download OPML.zip, extract the OPML folder, copy it where you want it, be aware that it can't be moved after you install. The obvious choice: your Program Files folder.

2. Open the folder and launch OPML.exe. A dialog should appear asking if you want to update to get the latest code. Please do. It's a "hot" install, you don't need to quit the app to keep going.

Macintosh: Permalink to this headline.

1. Download OPML.dmg, drag the OPML folder to the Applications folder.

2. Open it and run the OPML app. A dialog should appear asking if you want to update to get the latest code. Please do. It's a "hot" install, you don't need to quit the app to keep going.

How to update Permalink to this headline.

If you're already using the OPML Editor...

1. Choose Update opml.root from the File menu.

2. Quit the app and relaunch (this is needed to be sure the menubar refreshes).

That's all you need to do. You might want to visit the Preferences and Tools Catalog at the top of the Misc menu.

How to tell if you've got the August 2008 release Permalink to this headline.

On Windows, if you see an accordion player in the lower left corner of the editor window, you have the new release. If you see a parakeet there, you should update.

On Macintosh, if you see a Community and NewsRiver menu in the menubar, you have the old release, and should update.

Where to from here? Permalink to this headline.

I'm working my way through all the Tools and one-by-one re-releasing them. I've got the Podcatcher done, and the HowTo tool. Still have NewsRiver to do, and then a bunch of new tools that I've been working on this year but haven't released yet. The point of this cleanup was to make it easy to roll out lots of tools that run in the OPML Editor.

Where is the old support site? Permalink to this headline.

Its address changed to: http://oldsupport.opml.org/. Most of the docs there are out of date, but it's preserved as an archive.
